Pete's Blog Alps 2007

Pete's Blog - Week 8(b)
The next day was shorter but would take us through the Vallée des Merveilles: a heritage site where bronze age rock carvings were scattered all around. Because of vandalism in the past we had to stay strictly on the path and also pack our walking poles away. The weather was getting hotter so that even the cold showers at the Refuge de Merveilles were very welcome.
It was to be an eleven hour trek to Sospel for our penultimate day. A climb up to the Pas du Diable and then a long ridge type descent into Sospel. Some steep drops helped to keep us on our toes and we got our first view of the sea that afternoon. Sospel is a lovely old town, as much Italian as French.
It was an emotional last day as we climbed up to our last col and looked down onto Menton. The final descent was hard but the smell of pine and wild thyme helped to ease the pain. The cicadas almost drowned out the noise of the motorway below. A few hours later, after the photos and hugs, we all had a welcome swim in the warm Méditerranée!
