Tanzania 2010 Additional Tips

Here are a few other random issues to consider before you go as well as looking at the useful links. Many of these are to be found within the comprehensive Exodus Trip Advice booklet.
Choice of package In addition to climbing Kilimanjaro you will have the option of other add-ons. We certainly found the safari package the perfect antidote to the challenge of Kili.
Insurance Whatever you do remember to ensure that the fact that you will be climbing to high altitude is included in your cover! For this reason we opted to take the Exodus cover.
Money You will not need many Tanzanian shillings as shopping options are limited. You will, however, need US dollars to pay for your Visa on arrival and to cover the tipping costs that you will want to give.
Sleeping bag and clothes It is essential to have a high quality 4/5 seasons sleeping bag as it is extremely cold at night. The photos also show how rough the terrain is for sleeping - pack a good sleeping mat! It is better to take too much extra warm clothing than too little (you will have porters!) ... and many trekkers offer spare items to porters at the end of the trek after they have seen them at altitude with limited gear.
Poles From Uhuru Peak to Mweka is a descent of over 4000m in less than 30 hours - a huge assault on your knees. We always use poles for our treks but believe them utterly essential for this trek.
Responsible Tourism Make sure you read all guidance on this before leaving.
