In an outdoor shop we spotted by chance a guide book to the GTA in Italy, a walk and route
which we did not know. A quick browse suggested it would warrant further research ... and the result was
perhaps the finest mountain walk we have yet undertaken in Europe. We soon realised that it parallelled much
of our 2007 GR5 route in reverse,
following a broad semi-circular arc to the west of Turin from south to north. We have not yet completed the
GTA as we ran out of time and, on reflexion, wish we had begun by the sea. All that is for the future, as are
the wealth of Via Alpina routes
which follow both the northern and southern sides of the full Alpine range from southern France to Slovenia.
