GTA Italy 2012 Photos Cols

These photos may appear a bit pretentious ... but we wanted to keep a visual record of the many cols we traversed during our progress. A quick glance at the route details will show that the majority of days involved a climb and descent totalling nearly 2,000 metres - the equivalent of climbing Snowdon from sea level and going back down again!

At some of the cols we encountered snow, at others mist and fog and usually quite a lot of wind. A steep ascent might be followed by a gentler descent ... or the reverse. Often the final section would involve a scramble or a passage across loose scree. Strangest of all would be the fact that, although there were few others walking the route, we invariably seemed to meet walkers on or very close to each col we crossed - a chance to share experiences and tips on the route ahead.
